" My ammeter has stopped registering any output, and the vessel's instrumentation does not include a voltmeter. I suspect the issue is the ammeter, and not the alternator. How would I test the alternator using a hand-held multimteter to see if it is, indeed, functioning?

Any help is appreciated! "

" With multimeter - Before sta

" With multimeter - Before starting engine-
check battery plus to minus.
Fully charged battery will read 12 - 12.5
Start engine run to 1500 r.p.m. and bring back
to 800 r.p.m. if alternator is working,
battery should read 13.2 - 13.8 "

Took your advice: Without the engine running, I got 12.29 volts. With the engine running at fast idle, I got 12.13 volts.

I have a feeling that the problem is centered in the external voltage regulator. It was under water for a day or so last fall during a near-sinking event, and I've had issues ever since. While it seems to be serviceable, I can't think of anything else obvious. BTW, the alternator was never in the water itself.

Any other suggestions? "
