Motor jumps out of gear

" just bought a brand new 14' alumacraft, and a 1996 leftover 25 hp yamaha..took it out for a ride today, and went into reverse, gave it a little gas, and it jumped into neutral..this dosent sound right to me..is it an over rev type thing? "
 
Sounds like shift rod needs t

Sounds like shift rod needs to be adjusted at the midsection. Adjust rod so that it goes a little further in reverse then try in fwd to make sure it still works.
