Am considering purchasing a 1983 80hp merc. So far I have checked the compression it was @ 130 130 130 & 124. What else should I be looking at before purchasing & is there any major defects with this model engine. Any advise would be appreciated.

Jeff..These were quite a decent engine with only a few hiccups. The problems with these engines were water entering the powerhead from either the exhaust plates or the lower main crank seals. Most guys recommend these sideplates and seals be done as maintanace every 2-3 years. If these items are satisfactory then you should be pretty right. I would also check for excessive corrosion and leaking power trim cylinders. Also drain some gear oil and make sure there is no water in there or metal shavings(tiny hair like pieces are ok).
