My manual says the shaft seals

My manual says the shaft seals should be installed "back to back". The drawings are such that I can't tell if that's metal to metal or rubber to rubber side of the seals. Because this lower unit appears not to match the paint on the engine I'd prefer not to trust looking at how the old ones were installed.

"Thanks for the words of wisdom. I'm about ready to leap off into the lower unit. Santa brought me a slide hammer/seal puller, so that should make things a little easier. The manual lists several specialized tools that I don't have. Are any of those absolutely required, or can I make do with substitutes?"
