OMC king Cobra impeller shaft

I have replaced my old impeller shaft on a 1988 baby king cobra. I removed the bearings from the previous shaft and installed then on the new shaft. When installing shaft in the upper gear housing the bearing carrier sits about 1/8 the inch away from the housing. When the small bearing at the end of the shaft is removed the carrier is flush with the housing and the gears mesh. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
