BF50A lower casing vacuum hose

I've just removed the lower casing from a BF50A to replace the impellor and I have noticed a short length of rubber hose attached to the inside of the casing.
Can someone please explain what this hose does and what maintenance it requires, if any. Thanks
 
^^^yup, my bet as well!^^^

It's used as an option to the plastic ones mounted to the bottom of the transom - that are always catching weeds and breaking off. If you're thinking about using it, make sure it's clear. There's a small port in the leading edge of the lower unit that's easily plugged.
