Engine or lower unit making rattling sound

We have a 1992 Searay 200 bow rider with a 5.0 Mercrusier. Ran fine all summer but the idle has always been too low and the engine would sometimes stop running at idle. Yesterday I decided to adjust it but without a tachometer. Did this by ear and looking at the dash tack and went from 450 to about 700rpm. It sounded good, not like it was racing or anything and shifted smoothly into forward and reverse with no odd noise. We live on a channel that takes about 6 minutes to reach the open water. We took it out today and went through our normal routine when we get to open water by shifting into reverse and gassing it a little to remove any weeds we might have picked up from the channel. Shifted back into neutral and into forward gear, no problem. But as we accelerated we started hearing a rattling sound coming from the engine or lower unit. So we stopped to check if we might have a rope or something wrapped around the prop. Everything looked fine so we started the engine and could still hear the rattling but now it won't engage forward or reverse. Had to tow it home. Does anyone have any idea what may have happened or what to check??? Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
