1977 Johnson 200 tachometer

Good morning everyone,
I’m new here. I purchased a boat with a 1977 200 Johnson that replaced a Mercury prior to me buying it. All the gauges are still Merc. I really need a tachometer, however, I don’t know what pulse rate my motor has. Also, does it matter if the tachometer is designed for a 6cyl motor or will any OMC tachometer with the ability to set the proper pulse rate work?
thanks for your help.

It requires a tachometer that gets its signal from the alternator. All, or nearly all modern outboard tachs are that way. The 200 is a 6-pulse setting.

I don't know what the Merc tach is, so can't comment on that.

Thanks Fdrgator for responding so soon with this information, I’ll see if I can find one designed for OMC.
