4.3 mercury V6 steering pump noise.

Hi all,

Im a relatively inexperienced boat owner and currently own a 2004 Larson with a 4.3 V6 mercruiser. The engine has been running beautifully however I noticed a knocking noise between low to idle revs. I investigated further and found the pulley wheel on the front of the steering pump has a small amount of horizontal play. I placed a block of wood on the front of the pulley and ran the engine. With a small amount of pressure applied the knocking stopped. The steering oil quality suggests no evidence of internal parts deteriorating and I believe it’s reasonably rare for these components to fail.
In your opinion do I need a new steering pump? Also, as these things always happen at the worst possible time with a family holiday next week, based around the boat would you feel happy running it? It’s looking unlikely I’ll be able to get the part changed in time.
many help/advice is hugely appreciated.
