1987 Sunrunner VP DP 290?

I recently purchased a 1987 20' sunru nner. It has a VP DP that I think is a 290 from what I see on line. The only number I can find is on the transom plate inside the boat pm 867949 8617 serial 322633. When I pulled the outdrive off there was oil in the bellows. The engine is a mercury 5.0 305 cid. My local boat shop looked up the numbers and it is from a 2004 bayliner. It has all of the VP parts installed but the block froze so I pulled the engine. Where is a good source for repair manuals? My local shop doesn't have one. I have OMC and Merc manuals and lots of experiance but no experiance with VP. Is VP 280 and 290 interchangable? There is a operational 280 connected to a 305 that I might be able to pickup cheap.

Ayuh,..... The earlier motor is a 2 pc. rear main, 'n the later is a 1 pc. so there maybe fitment issues,....
