I recently purchased a used 2002 Yamaha 8hp 2stroke outboard. The engine runs perfectly, and looks almost mint. However the engine is incredible loud, I wish it had come with earplugs. I believe the root of the problem is the exhaust is not making it down to the propeller. I took off the lower unit, and if you look up into the engine I can see the exhaust pipe which releases exhaust into the open cavity of the lower unit. I’d expect it to then go out the propeller. I’m not seeing any blockages anywhere. Some exhaust does come out of a couple holes towards the top, and some comes out in the lower unit around the gear shifter rod.
Has anyone experienced this before? I also have a Nissan 9.8 2 stroke that sounds completely normal.
