2012 Tohatsu MFS 30B 4 Stroke Outboard

Hi All,
At fast tickover, does anyone know the expected water flow rate (L/min) that we should see if the thermostat is removed and water collected at that point? If we had this information we could confirm if the pump is working correctly and the waterways are not clogged.
Also, when we first bought this engine we had an intermittant overtemp, and Tohatsu told the dealer to drill a small hole in the thermostat which resolved the problem. We have just replaced this thermostat but this new unit does not have this hole, and we are getting the same problem. Should this new thermostat have this hole?

No clue about actual volume, but it usually gushes. Typically no on the extra hole, but it won't hurt, especially at low flow rates.

Hi Paul, Thanks for your reply! In your position as Tohatsu Engineer, is it possible for you to get the flow rate from Tohatsu?
Thanks, Brian46

You could call Tohatsu America in Dallas, and they might be able to look it up.

Hi Paul,

Contacted Tohatsu Japan who referred me to the main importer in UK. They say info on volume of water not available, but did confirm that this early B model suffered from an airlock prior to the thermostat, and the fix was to drill a 2 millimetre hole in the skirt. We have fitted a new thermostat, but they still think that this could be a problem and suggest drilling this hole. Hope this info will be of use to anyone else with this problem.

Hi Paul,

We still have over heating problem, audible and LED alarms and limp mode .
Is limp mode only associated with water over temperature, or low oil pressure as well? We have drilled 2 mm hole in the thermostat, fitted a new impeller kit and replaced the heat sensor. We have a reasonable flow from the tell tale, but after 10 minutes on the water at slow speed we have the alarms and limp mode. Any idea what we should do next?

Thanks,

Hi Paul

Thanks for that. We now have an IR thermometer and a pressure gauge, so hope we can make some progress this coming weekend.
