Mariner 40 ELO

I just bought a mariner 40 for $600. The guy ran it for me and I told him it sounded like a Yamaha 440 Exciter Snowmobile. He then replier that it is in fact a Yamaha and showed me the Yamaha logo on several of the motor parts. I just want to know what year it is before I buy any parts that might not match.

this is what the tag states:

Mariner 40 ELO
6E9 L 425895

one website said: E is for Electric star, L is for long shaft, O is for oil injected

no idea what the 6E9 is? Or the second L? the 425895 made me think it was a 1975? but, the seller said it came off a 1987 pontoon and he was sure it was original to the pontoon, as it seemed to be factory installed on the pontoon. He buys these often because they last longer than the pontoons?

Who can tell me what I have?

An engine made by Yamaha.----A 1983 or newer I think.

Thanks for your reply! I think you are right, but would love to know what it is for sure? I am guessing you said 1983 or later because that is when Yamaha made them?
