Problem solved!!!!

Hi all,

Like to share a solved mystery while rebuilding a 1967 Johnson 6 hp.

Previous owner said that he could never get it to idle down without slowly constantly shutting down. Both cylinders were a perfect 90 # each

I went ahead with a carb rebuild, replaced thermostat that was stuck open. Replaced head gasket that was original. Rebuilt fuel pump. Replaced coils, condensers and points along with plugs. Points were burnt and had original coils. Lubed all grease fittings and polished up.

After completion it went into the test tank. Started right up accelerated really smooth.

Ouch..... Would idle down and putter out slowly and die. I watched the throttle spring slowly close in.

Upon further investigation I found that the throttle twist grip tension spring was missing. Installed a replacement. This motor now runs like a swiss watch and idles down to a put put and holds. I could tell at one time their was a remote throttle control installed. It was obvious the spring was removed at that time and never replaced.
