28 Mariner

I have been trying to breathe some life in to an old Mariner 28 for a friend of a friend. My question is about the spark I should expect from this engine. I am used to working on OMCs mostly and I am not getting the spark to jump on my gap tester but it will fire the plugs when grounded to the engine block. I am only getting an occasional pop/backfire out of this one. Running out of ideas.

I have changed out the key in the driveshaft as I thought the timing was off. Cleaned the carb. Checked compression. High 90s on both holes.

If your spark tester is properly grounded you should see something like 7/16" of spark. A little puny spark isn't going to fire much fuel.
