NIssan 6hp 4 stroke - grommet on drive shaft housing - part number 369-61016-0

Hey yall,

I am trying to figure out what the grommet on the drive shaft housing does (NIssan 6hp 4 stroke - grommet on drive shaft housing - part number 369-61016-0) and if it should always be completely above the water line when mounted to boat. The parts list and manual I have mention nothing except name and part number.

It's so you can access the shift coupler wjen dropping the LU such as to work on the water pump.
