2001 Yamaha 130 2 stroke - hard to start

I have a Yamaha 130 hp two stroke that won’t start unless I spray starter fluid into the carburetor. The choke is functional but unless I spray it it won’t start. Any ideas?

If the engine idles once started and runs as it should, the carbs are fine. Hard starting on an V4 Yamaha two stroke with a mechanical choke is usually a bad fuel pump(leaking into the crank case), or the gasket on the carb cover is not letting the mechanical choke plate close.

On your next cold start, remove the cover and test. Make sure the choke is closing completely.

Once it starts, it runs fine. Then will start all day no problem. Next morning, won’t start. I will check to see if its closing all the way.
