Crankshaft seal

I'm trying to change the crankshaft seal on my 06 honda 50hp outboard, but can't get the big nut off under the flywheel. Does this have to come off in order to get to that seal?
 
The nut that holds the belt pulley?

Kinda barbaric, but a cold chisel set against a corner of that nut, and a swat or 2 with a ball peen hammer generally has that nut loose pretty easily.
