Water Pump sucking air at outdrive gear housing split

My water pump is sucking air and not pumping. I traced to the lower and upper outdrive split. I had separated after having a severe overheating for inspection. It was hard to align the dogleg water tube during reassembly. I’m going to split it again and try to reseal.

Any good instructions or more so helpful hints to reassemble without having air leak into water tube/passage??
 
It would help if you told us WHICH drive you have. BTW... for many years and several Volvo powered boats, I've changed it over to thru hull water pipckup with a strainer. My latest version on my current boat has an external wedge shaped pickup/strainer. No more issues with plastic blocking water pickup up or vacuum leaks in the drive or elbow.
A further benefit is the ability to easily plumb in a T for flushing and winterizing at the thru hull
