Suzuki BF15 - 12v connected reverse polarity

My pal has a canal cruiser with Suzuki BF 15, approx year 2005.

He has just replaced one of the two boat batteries. It looked near-identical to the one it was replacing but, regretfully, the poles were reversed.

The boat has a 1-2-Both switch. When he turned the switch to Both, it fried, as did the lead to the battery.

Not sure if engine received reverse polarity, or huge spike, or both.

The lead and switch have now been replaced. The boat electrics all work ok but nothing from the engine.

Confirmed by a multi-meter, there is 12v going to the main engine connection (starter solenoid) but the engine will not turn-over using the key.

Not sure if there is an in-line fuse or reverse polarity protection on this engine.

Would appreciate any advice, especially a fault finding tips. Thanks in advance.
