20hp Mariner - is it Yamaha or Merury built ??

Thanks for the ad.

I have just bought a 20hp Mariner and am struggling to find its exact details. It needs some TLC, so for parts ordering I need some help.

The plate on the transom reads - Mariner 20, 653 L 36667, Made in Japan.

I called the local Mercury dealer and he said call Yamaha and the Yamaha dealer said call Mercury !

I believe this outboard is much older than I thought, if I'm on the right track it is 1975 ?? I'm hoping it is still serviceable.

I'm also hoping its a Yamaha built Mariner as they seem to have a good rep as a strong motor.

Thanks for the quick reply racerone. While I am getting familiar with this outboard, could someone tell me what a part is called, it is behind the gear shifter and is linked to the throttle cable locking the shifter into the drive position, presumably to prevent changing into neutral whilst at high revs. Part of it is broken so it isn't doing anything at the moment so I would like to know if I should repair/replace it. Hopefully you get what I am talking about, I'll try to add a photo but it doesn't seem to upload for me.
