Gear case fix

Just documenting the replacement of my prop shaft seal on my mid-90,s vintage M5B workhorse…. I have factory and aftermarket manuals. 90% done…

likely the seal is original, but not sure as I’ve only owned motor for 7 years, it sat for 8 years before that in storage as prior owner was in arrears with her sailboat winter storage….

after prop removal, the thrust washer was basically welded onto the prop shaft housing..every attempt to remove was futile…. In fact the housing wouldn’t budge. I end up having to implode the housing in order to remove..amazingly the shaft was unscathed after the torrent….

what was supposed to be a simple replace the seal ended up replacing the bloody housing too. I found the housing, seal and bearing as a complete unit for $70 from Tohatsu…

pictures below…

after cleaning the shaft and gear with solvent, and cleaning the crud inside the LU it popped back on. Easy…. What is weird….

I tested the clutch operation with shift rod (with LU not attached to powehead)…forward and reverse work fine. Neutral….it will spin slowly in reverse…. Completely perplexed…. Everything installed as taken apart..

Ok even weirder….when I mounted the LU to power read…. Then tested shifting while hand turning the flywheel…. Neutral work fine… what gives…?

Sometimes the LU oil can partially allow the prop shaft to turn. Could be either F or R. Totally normal.
