2005 Volvo Penta 3.0L w/ SX-M 1.97 Dies when Shifting into Reverse

Help. I have a new to me 2005 Volvo Penta 3.0L w/ SX-M 1.97 outdrive and it dies when shifting into reverse. Was told it has low hours, < 200, when I bought it. I only ran it once before winterizing it. At the dock it idled fine in neutral but when shifted into reverse would die. When I was able to get it going in reverse to get out of the mooring area it ran fine in forward. Anyone know of the potential problem fixes? Thanks.

This might be a long shot, but have you warmed the engine up thoroughly before backing out?
I have the identical power plant, (2008), with 322 hours.
it has never liked being put in reverse when cold.
It starts instantly, (use only a single stroke of the throttle to set the choke), then, as long as I let it idle til temp gets to around 140F, it never misses a beat. Try to back out 30 seconds after starting, it will die.
