thunderbolt - when does it actually fire?

Hi - can someone tell me me when the distributor signals a fire?

Is it at the starting or ending point of the gap/solid part? It would help me get the initial timing much closer on rebuilds- thanks

Im referring to the tabs on the rotor base passing the pickup tip-

you set the harmonic balancer at the "0" notch, drop the dist in with rotor facing #1 post in cap,
start engine and adjust timing

..... after making sure that cylinder #1 is on the compression stroke... I do that b y removing the spark plug, and plugging the spark plug hole with my finger tip and "bumping" the engine.
