Accidentally left the cap off the flush attachment on one of my motors. Engine overheated and i knew why immediately. Placed the blue cap back on but it overheated again. Thought i may have melted the raw water pump but when i pulled it off, everything was fine. Figured maybe the thermostat was sticking so i replaced it. Still overheating but a little inconsistently. Ran for 20 minutes and all was fine but then overheated again. Never had an overheating issue until i left the flush cap off. Is it possible that when the pump ran dry it allowed the pump impeller to get hot enough that the impeller is slipping on its hub?

Any other thoughts?
