Engine quits when put in gear

I have a '88 85 hp engine. Replaced fuel pump parts, and installed a new impeller. Those systems are working fine. Will run great if I can get it into gear without stalling. Trouble is that is a rare occasion. Guessing it's a linkage problem?

What's the RPMs at idle in N while in the water?
1100 is about the right rpm's
750-800 in gear in the water.

Do a link and sync.

Post the compression test numbers.------Motor is not producing correct power to keep running with extra load.-----Perhaps only running on 2 cylinders.
 
The first 2 steps in diagnosing: compression and spark test.
The 88/85 won't run good or at all if it has low comp, I know I had 4/5 different ones.
Does it start easy?

Picked up a digital tach, checked the rpms. Read between 680-700. Turned up to 1000ish, and problem solved! Motor runs great, thanks for your help.
