Hello,
Hoping someone can help.
I have a Mariner 1997 40hp 2stroke 2cyl electric start made in Belgium.
The magnets on the flywheel disintegrated, however it kept running fine.

I removed the flywheel and tried to source a new part. The flywheel on the outboard has the part number 261-9007-C3 (whether or not this was the original flywheel I don't know?)
I was unable to find a second hand flywheel with matching serial number. So I sourced another which I believed would do:276-823760-C2.
After fitting the new flywheel, the outboard won't start, It sounds as though the timing is out. It sound as though it's trying to fire but is really retarded as there is a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust.

I've checked the spark, compression, stator and strigger. All are fine!

Could it be that the timing is out due to a different flywheel? The timing can't be adjusted on these outboards. If anyone can help me source an identical flywheel, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks
