have 2-stroke 84 merc which now shows signs
of oil coming from under flywheel, port side
Is the usual culprit an oil seal change?
many thanks

Yes. Protect crankshaft with a thin piece of tin first. You don't want to scratch it. Do not use ethanol fuel. Seals will fail in time as ethanol destroys rubber and synthetic constituents, besides that, it not only produces less power, but it has 1/10th the "shelf life" of pure clear petrol fuel. I know. 50 percent, or more, of my repairs are ethanol related.

May cause the upper cylinder to draw air through the seal. Depending on how many cylinders it has, you may get a "hickup" every so often at low idle, most often a single cyl. or a twin. The cylinder will be running leaner and could score if problem is not corrected. I have seen this happen firsthand over my 55 years of outboard repair/overhaul.
