I am familiar with automotive mechanics but not versed in outboards. So I need help.
We were having a great day on the water. Turned off the motor and upon start up the was a rhythmic thump, about one every 1/2 second. Did not sound metallic and wasn't loud. I headed for the dock, the motor still had power, and the thump was still present, frequency increased with speed, and did not get any louder. After coming off plane for a no wake situation, the thump disappeared. We boated for another hour. Everything seemed to be back to normal then, while on plane the motor got louder and seemed to loose power, even though the motor sounded fine only louder. I came off plane, the was a sound like something went back into place, the motor sound went back to normal and power seemed to be restored. I was at the dock so decided just to head in before a catastrophic failure.
I realize this is vague so any suggestions on where to start looking is greatly appreciated.
