Have an old Yamaha lower unit sitting around I have decided to fool with. It is from a 30 hp MLHV 1997. Put in new water pump and cannot get the lower unit on to save my life. The shift rod has the rubber plug that is fitted into the top of the gearcase. The lower end of the rod has this 3 step device that is for shifting the gears. Cannot get this device to seat or whatever it does so that I can attach the lower shift rod to the upper shift rod. Any ideas?
