Cylinder honing

I am doing a ring replacement on a 1988 20HP (J20ECCA).

Can anyone recommend the material and grit for a ball home to put new cross hatches into the cylinders?

A local circle track engine builder about 30 years ago told me he brushes his bores and then wraps leather around the brush and runs that around in there. He said its like high end knife sharpening. The brush work hardens the surface...doesn't remove much material. The leather thing smooths over the sharp peaks so the peaks do not smear during initial startup.

I've done this ever since..

Ball hone just makes a nice looking finish for a novice.-----Does not " improve " roundness / eggshaped / tapered bores.-----Waste of time in my opinion.

You need a rigid hone to see if cylinder is out of round as posted..I use ball hone it finish up freshly bored cylinders that was honed to size
