Hi I have a Mercruiser 5.7 1996 with EFI my problem is with the Delco EST pickup
sensor. It has a copper shield over it and its loose. The sensor seems to be ok runs good
but the cooper cover moves back and forth. Does any one know if this shield or cover is for and is it supposed to be tight?

Hi its just the cover i found the pickup sensor/coil was corroded and replaced it. I had to remove the distributer
to do this no big deal. I marked every thing and put it back the same way. do i need to check the timing and how
do i jumper it if i dont have the 91-805747A1 timing tool, it looks just like a jumper, can i get along without it with my own jumper?
has any one done this on the delco remy est?

if it starts ok and the ECU connects to the distributor, I don't believe I'd mess with the jumper...would be a good idea to make sure the advance function works though...

Its best to check timing after removing the distributor, but obviously you marked it well and properly reinstalled it so may e not required.

You can buy the shunt here https://leadersrpmshop.com/volvo-pe...MIlaf_ieeP8QIVDTizAB2cQQhWEAQYASABEgKY-PD_BwE

im sure available other places and likely our host at marine engine sells it too but i couldn’t find a link

timing procedure is at bottom of this page https://bpi.ebasicpower.com/faq/delcoestwiring.htm

all the shunt does is lock out the electronic advance at idle so you can set initial advance.not needed if it runs right but would be good when you set it and remove the shunt to check total advance . Not sure what total your engine takes but somewhere in the 24-28 degrees total by 2800-3 k rpm is typical. You need an advance timing light or a timing tape on your balancer to do this
