Ignition coil

What coil for a 1986 5.7 270?
Prestolite distributor with points, no ballast resistor.
Previous owner painted the coil so no way to id this thing.
thanks!

if it is the original prestolite distributor, it would have used points with a ballast resistor...

if the points have been swapped for a breakerless system, I'd rely on that system's documentation for coil recommendations...some with keep the ballast; others will delete it...

After looking again and popping the dist cap to look at the guts, I realize I do in fact have have a breakerless set up. I was so used to the pertronix conversion I had in the Ford, this looked very different so I just assumed it was a points distributor. Nope. It is an old Prestolite module, 65-189, that certainly explains the missing ballast resistor! The coil must have internal resistance, I just don't know how may ohms I should have.

I'll peruse the internet and do some research and decide wether or not to put in a newer module but I do have a 1.5 ohms Pertronix Flame thrower coil with internal resistance from the old engine that I think should work.

Primary resistance 1.25-1.4
Secondary resistance 9,400-11,700

I'm inclined to say your old flame thrower coil should be good
