Whats The Vent on my Johnson Intermediate Unit?

Folks,

Vertically above the lower unit and below the powerhead of my 25 HP 2 stroke Johnson is a vent with 2 ports. Occasionally warm water comes out of it.

Not being a fisherman or boater I'm not able to identify it or know if its supposed to leak water periodically. It's held on by 3 screws and has a rubber gasket under it. Moreover, underneath it looks like a maze of aluminum channels like a filter of sorts.

Help tell me the purpose because no illustration or Youtube can tell me what it is.

Thanks,

??-----It is called the exhaust relief.-----Outboards have had this feature in one form or another for about 70 years.----The idea is to allow exhaust out so that the motor does not have to push it 2' down under water.----Makes for better low speed operation.----Yes and some water will spit out too.

I thought I'd answered the other day but it didnt take. Anyhow, Thanks for the answer, I'd hoped that it was going to be this way and it was!

I appreciate it.
