1983 Merc 115 part identification

Hello, I think I have narrowed down the problem with my 1983 merc 115. Theres some cables falling apart going to this device under the flywheel. Ive attached some photos of it. Does anyone know what this device is called or the small black one that the yellow cables connect too?

Also, how hard is it to take off the flywheel? Is there an issue with timing I need to be worried about or does it just pop back on/off

The yellow wires come FROM the stator and go to that little box.----The little box is the rectifier.----The rectifier changes AC pulses to DC to charge the battery.
