Johnson / Evinrude interchangeability

The 1973 lower unit shifts to forward with a DOWN motion of this shift rod.-----The 78 model shifts to forward with an UP motion of the shift rod.----Clearly a case of ---" they look the same but they are not the same"----If you install the 73 unit you will go backwards if you put control in forward.-----And before you ask you can not make changes in the control box or use a different propeller.-----Need to make changes on motor linkages.----There should be lots of the correct lower units available.----Your location ?
 
Also, are there year and hp model ranges that will work, and are Johnson and evinrude absolutely interchangeable (same models)?
 
Do not believe every thing your friends tell you about what will fit.---------Post #6 makes it very clear I believe.
