My 5.0 Merc is leaking water at bottom of timing chain cover. I can’t find any external leaks. Is there freeze plugs under the timing cover or a bolt that can come loose. Also can the cover come off without issues with oil pan. Any help would on this issue would be great.
Thanks
Nate

Yes. People usually loosen a few bolts on each side (going into the block) to make things easier.

To further what Dieter is saying, there's usually a weep hole directly beneath the drive shaft of the circulating pump. This would be hidden by the pulley when mounted on the engine.

In addition, I believe at least one of the bolt holes for attaching the circulating pump goes into a coolant passage. Coolant can travel the threads of a bolt.

If there was water inside the timing cover, it would end up in the oil.
