1991 Johnson Fastrike starter problems

I have a 1991 Johnson 150 Fastrike. The starter assembly keeps shooting up when I try to start it and blows through and breaks the top cover that houses the top bearing. This all started when I replaced the Driven gear. The gear looks good to the ***** eye. I have spoken to three Johnson mechanics and they say I am installing everything right, but have never heard of this before. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
 
Yes I have checked that. Originally pinon gear broke and trouble started after that. I found my old broken gear and used a gauge to compare the two gears. Looks exactly the same. I did notice some grease buildup on the shaft assembly. I have taken it out and made sure all the grease was out of it and lightly oiled it so it would slide easier. Do you think this could have been the problem?
