Volvo Penta 270/280 engine compatibility

I have an AQ120b and 270 outdrive. Lost compression on #4 cylinder and it seems cost prohibitive to repair. Plan was to part out engine, sell outdrive, give away the hull.

Then I stumbled across a Marine Engine model 181 FLJ that was originally mated to a 280 outdrive but has lately been attached to a jet pump. Good engine, good price.

What information do I need to know to see if the 181 will work with my 270? If it won't, what information do I need to know IF I consider looking for a 280?

A little reading indicates the 181 is a 4 cyl. It will work if you can get a 4 cyl VP flywheel cover to mate up to it. I would do some searching and see if the 181 has the same bolt pattern as your 120b. If it comes with the flywheel cover that mated it to the 280, then you're probably in good shape. No need to change the outdrive at all.

Thanks guys. It's engine only. Seems like the more I look into it, it becomes cost prohibitive for an older boat. I'll just part it out.
