1981 3.0l merc stern drive

Gday lads
new to boating, I bought a project boat.
i have an 81 merc 140. I’d like to upgrade the stern drive to
An alpha 1 from a 2000 boat with an 8 cyl. Is it possible and what are the pitfalls
thank you (be gentle to the new guy)
 
I am assuming you found a newer Alpha and want to hang it behind your 3.0......

Well unless you change out the transom assembly that will not be happening.....

Also, the gear ratio for a 3.0 is 1.98:1 the Gear ratio for a V8 is usually 1.50:1 depending on the CID.

If you are new to boating I have to advise you to stop! Getting a 40 year old "Project" boat for your first boat is not the way to go.
