Mercury 50hp "Classic 50" Help with trim

Hi guys, I recently bought a merc 50 that came on a project boat. It didn't have any power tilt or trim on it, and I was wondering what the 2 rams on the side are for. To tilt the motor I have to lift it manually, but I am wondering if these are there to somehow assist the tilt? (Pictures included)

Also when I try to lift the engine it's pretty smooth for a little bit and then it's pretty stiff towards the end when it gets higher. What could be the reason for that?

Thanks for any help.Merc 50 trim (1).jpgMerc 50 trim (2).jpg

Those are "shock absorbers" designed to limit the motor's kickup if you hit a rock or floating debris in the water, there's also a tilt switch that cuts the ignition for a moment to prevent overreving. It gets stiffer as the motor tilts to limit the amount that the motor rises out of the water.
