MFS6CS SailPro tilt mechanism problem

I just replaced the lower unit w/ a complete assembly from Tohatsu. When tilting the motor up the shift rod no longer contacts the tilt mechanism flat surface; it slides off and goes "inside" the opening causing a lot of noise when turning the motor, not to mention that when lowing the unit it doesn't shift. The shift rod is not bent, nor is there any visible issue w/ the tilt mechanism. What do I need to do?
 
You need to adjust the shift coupler, accessible from the grommet at the side of the midsection. Item 26 in the parts catalog diagram:
