1981 Johnson 90 HP 2-Stroke Shifting problems

The engine sits on a newly acquired Boston Whaler Montauk 17' from the same year. It had a major overhaul in 2005, and sat until last weekend. Engine runs great.

However, during the first outing, the boat barely went into reverse and not until the throttle was engaged, leading to some tricky low speed docking situations.

With the cowling off and shifter cable disconnected I can push the shifter into gear without trouble. Problem appears to be that this loose bracket which holds the cable is being pushed back into the engine block, preventing it from going back far enough to engage reverse. Thinking there may be too much play in the shift rod assembly, before it gets to the cable bracket.

Any help for a new owner would be much appreciated!

There is nothing wrong with that bracket !!-------You need to remove the lower unit and set the SHIFT ROD HEIGHT on this motor.

Update: In preparing to take the lower unit off discovered that the shifting rod lever had failed. Ordered a new one. Will update if that takes care of the issue.
