1956 Johnson 10 QD-17 on the pond

We took the motor out for the first test. The pond is in south Georgia at my folks place. It's small but big enough and deep enough to have some fun. The videos below are my son testing it out with my dads 14 foot flat bottom John (Alumacraft 1442 I think)

This vid shows it running about as good as I could get it. It seemed to run smooth (and very quiet) at WOT. I did get some adjustments in per Joe Reeves directions, but I think there's more to do if I get it out on a bigger body of water.

These two videos show it bogging from a hole shot, or trying accelerate quickly from low RPM. Looking for any comments of feedback on what adjustments may help here. I was not really able to get any low speed adjustments to change the behavior of the motor. It still idles smoothly, but not at the "low" setting", it still shuts off when I get close to the "shift" position. Wonder if it's a cam adjustment on the magneto plate that's needed??

I haven't worked on a 10hp of this vintage. But I fixed up my Dads 3hp Evinrude. I was able to get both low & high adjustments done. Check points to make sure they are set to the correct gap. Had a motor that they were set to .045" and was boggy. Reset to .020" and is as snappy as a 1.7hp can be. How is the carb? In need of a deep clean and rebuild? You should be able to idle right down to barely running. Also when you monkey with the low speed it should respond. Guessing that will be the culprit.

Worth a check, for the education at least. I just picked this motor up recently in ready to run condition. All I did was inspections, exhaust side cleaning, and conversion to fuel pump. I'll give the points a check and report back.

The carb was apparently redone with new kit. I'll follow up with the previous owner to make sure. When I first fired it up weeks ago (other thread on the topic) it was way out of adjustment. I got guidance from Mr. Reeves and followed it to get it running as seen in the videos. Thanks for the reply.

There are some guru's here on that motor, let's see what they have to say.
Are you running the double line , old fuel tank ?

Nice spot....wish I was there. Love Georgia and South Carolina, Northern Florida. You guys are smart to live there, but I think I would miss the seasons.
Shinola did a nice conversion to single line tank here. As far as the bogging....it's not too bad, but you could richen low speed needle a bit and see if that helps. Also, these are not fast acceleration under load, you have to "feather" throttle as rpm's climb. Believe it or not....properly done.....on a little boat, a 120 pound kid.....or girl, can get up on skis with a 10 horse.
