Life of cambelts?

What is the expected life of a cambelt, say for a 20Hp engine. I suppose I am asking are they known to fail and is the engine an interferrence engine?
 
You did not mention model. On the MFS20D, I have never seen one fail. If it did, interference or not, you would likely destroy a couple of valves. If over 10 years old, not a bad idea to change the gearbelt for the cam. It's only a $12 part.
 
When I look closely you can examine this pretty well without taking off the starter gear cover. It looks pristine as I would expect after only 361 hours of careful use!
