Hi does any one know what size battery i need to start my Chrysler 12.9 the compression is realy good shop asks for a power rating havent got a clue can you help cheers mark.

Thanks for that its got to be a big garden tractor then trying a half charged leisure battery and its not turning fast enough to get it going plugs out it turns like there is no tomorrow but with plugs in compression is huge.

12.9 HP????? Pics and model/serial# please.

FIRST!!!! do a compression test.
Uneven compression can cause hard turning.
Remove both plugs when doing the test.

Even some big outboards use a 450-550CCA
But remember bigger(when it comes to batteries)
is better.

The 12.9 is kinda uncommon. Manual is available but it's not mine.

Note for Racer: EVERYTHING is complicated with these old Chryslers....I GOT LOTS OF EM HERE......they are tough to sell

Hi thanks for that i have eigth of them myself and looking for more uk has not got any for sale but when they are they are stupid money. think i have found the problem me being daft trying to start off battery with jump leads, looks like jump leads are sucking all the power before getting to engine so i have to buy some smaller cable dont know what size but ill just keep going down size till i find right one .cheers all mark.

Jumper cables :(

The smallest cable is around a 6 and lower is even better.
#2 #4 #0 is the best.

Back when things weren't crazy expensive, 1988
I made my own jumper cables out of #2 cable.
Red and Black 25ft. long.
Unfortunately someone wanted them more than I did. :(

That's exactly what happened to me....they stole them. Got a longshaft 15, but can't get the shifting detent just right. Seems the gear cases are a weak point with Chryslers.

I always thought the gear cases were the better ones.
Heavier duty than OMC and if the oil was checked
regularly they hardly ever went bad.
On the other forum(iboats) is another Chrysler/Force
repair forum and they cover linkage setup.

Yes I shall check it out, thanks. They are set up like some Volvo/Archimedes Pentas, really never had any trouble with my own personal motors but I get other Chryslers after they have been trashed. Often rust in lower units.

The only one guilty of having rust in the lower unit
is the person who doesn't follow a routine maintenance
program.
The person who doesn't check the oil or grease the shafts
is the one who ends up with rust in the lower.
Or if they do check/change the oil they don't use new seals
on the drain plug??????

I had a pair of 88/85hp Forces, both of them would
leak/weep a tiny bit of water around the bottom drain plug.
The allen head set screw was a poor choice for a drain plug.

Needles to say I changed the oil a LOT!!
Neither motor/gearbox failed in the 25 years I had them :)

Yes, I constantly run into that, Jerry.....so simple....yet so overlooked, neglected, and ignored.
