Alpha One Shift Problem

Just rebuilt lower unit water pump. Careful to "lock" shifter in forward (also remote control) prior to assembly. Now can't shift to forward, only reverse and neutral. Have tried adjusting cables with no luck. My question: If unit "jumped out of forward" prior to inserting splined shift shaft into upper female receiver during assembly, is it possible to adjust control arm in upper unit to correct shifting ? This would obviously require removal of whole out drive, but for me this would be easier than separating lower unit again.
Any help greatly appreciated.
 
You pulled the lower for service an now you have an issue... The only way to correct the issue is to correct your error. You cannot adjust this problem away.... Now that you moved the adjustments on the cables trying to correct your mistake, the whole system needs to be set up.
 
pull the lower unit, then pull the upper , . turn the shift shaft in the lower fully clockwise until prop is locked CCW. This is fwd gear
Carefully slide upper making sure the splined shaft correctly and easily goes into the upper shift shoe and that the shoe is in a straight line with the prop locked CCW. Start the 2 side nuts and tighten MAKING SURE THE BRASS TOP SHOE MOVES UP AND DOWN SLIGHTLY ON THE SPLINES EASILY.
install remaining nuts
Depending on how much you FUBARD the cable settings , place the shift slide in the roller arm making sure the shift shaft in the bottom of the gimbal is in a straight line. If not adjust it to be in a straight line.
Install drive and now make the correct adjustments according to the manual #6

New Problem: Alpha One will only shift into forward when unit is trimmed up about half way. Cable adjustment ? Shifts into reverse and neutral ok.
