I just purchased a 1977 evinrude 85 hp outboard.
model # 85799S I got info off of that but the serial # doesnt make since....
Can someone explain this to me please. Serial # is J0001073. Thank you
 
Why does the serial # not make sense to you.-------The model # is correct for a 77 model 85HP.----The model # is used to order parts / manuals.
 
????-----In 1977 that model # seems to indicate EXTRA long shaft.----But measure from where the motor hangs on the transom to the cavitation plate. to be sure.----There were not many extra long shaft in my area.-----They were just getting into that on 85 HP models on saltwater boats.------They were all equipped with electric chokes.
