Lower unit storage for winter

I currently have my lower unit off my 1986 Johnson 110 for repair. Can I store the boat and engine for winter with the lower unit off? I would like to work on it over the winter.
 
There is no difference ----lower unit on or off.-----Other than bigger " critters " can crawl in to build a home.------You might want to block it off with a hefty piece of plastic / plywood cover.
