1969 Chrysler 9.9 low compression Newbie questions

Hey there, acquired a 1969 Chrysler 9.9, model 901 serial 1200something:rolleyes:. First thing I did was run a compression check, on the top cylinder anyway, only one I can get to without a right angle adapter for the tester. Suppose to be between 115-125 and I'm reading 60 after 6-7 rapid pulls. Seems to top out consistently there. I'm a total newbie at this stuff but I'm gonna try and get this thing running solid through the winter. Not too worried about puling it apart I just want to make sure that I'm starting with the right foot forward.
Any knowledge you guys can drop on me about this old of a model would be great!

First thing: do another test with a different tester.
The comp readings on ANY pull start motor can be
way off compared to the printed specifications.

IF??? both cyl. are the same or real close? It shows
the motors probably ok and try to get it running.

Do a spark test on both cyl.
I think you have 2 coils and 2 sets of points and
condensers. The main reason for no spark most of
the time is the points are corroded and need filing
or sanding.

These old Chryslers run good and are fairly
dependable. Just keep the gas fresh and watch
out for Ethanol and condensation.

Finding parts can be tough so make sure the gear
housing has good oil and doesn't leak.
A fresh coat of paint always helps and you can
get decals for the cover.

A place for hard to find parts is Franz Marine

Good luck

Will do! I’ve also only done a spark test on the top cylinder as the lower is very difficult to get to without removing lower cowling. I’ll just do the old school test and stick that puppy on the block and see if she sparks. I actually look forward to working on this thing!
